MIT IAP 2022 Workshop Announcement

2022 APPLICATION IS NOW CLOSED, THANK YOU!

Are you a university student at MIT or Hong Kong interested in creating the next vibrant neighborhood in Hong Kong? Hong Kong Island South (Wong Chuk Hang, Aberdeen, and Ap Lei Chau areas), home to attractive coastal scenery and rich cultural landmarks such as Ocean Park and Jumbo Floating Restaurant…and more, now is excitedly connected to the greater metropolitan network via the new public transportation linkage.

MIT Hong Kong Innovation Node, supported by Invigorating Island South Office (IISO) and MIT Media Lab City Science Group, is delighted to offer Beyond Smart Cities: A Self-Sustaining and Liveable 10-min Neighborhood, a 13-day Independent Activities Period (IAP) workshop on January 3-15, 2022. We welcome students with diverse backgrounds in architecture, design, urbanism, planning, engineering, data science and related disciplines. Students from different programs and places will work in groups and interact closely with local decision-makers, built-environment professionals, and domain experts in Hong Kong and MIT.

This hybridized “virtual design workshop” will bring students from Hong Kong and MIT together to address some of the challenges cities are facing, yet deployable at a local scale. Students are expected to participate in a January charrette, held virtually and synchronously between Hong Kong and Boston. Each group will develop its unique strategies to unleash development potential, enhance connectivity and walkability, and enliven the district!
