Since the start of 2018, we've been firing on all cylinders at the Node with new activities and programs. Here are highlights of what we've been up to this quarter:
  • Our fourth MEMSI cohort of MIT and Hong Kong students kicked off the new year with teams presenting innovative business ideas and proof-of-concept prototypes that solve real-world problems
  • We launched a new sector-focused entrepreneurship bootcamp on FinTech (MEFTI) for university students, set to receive its first cohort this summer
  • We have an exciting Entrepreneurs-in-Residence program at the Node for startups contributing to our mentorship and learning community
  • Prof. Eugene Fitzgerald led our first corporate innovation training program helping executives transform their company through the iterative innovation process
  • The Node hosted several seminars for the community - do check in to our events page periodically for upcoming speakers and activities!
Hong Kong Federation of Women kicks off training at the Node

The Hong Kong Federation of Women hosted their fifth development program for 160 young women centered on innovation and entrepreneurship. Prof. Charlie Sodini, Faculty Director of the MIT Hong Kong Innovation Node, shared the Node's vision and emphasized universities as one of the biggest assets of the city.
MITx Online Learners Connect Offline

We held an intimate meetup with MITx online learners to discover their digital learning experiences and how offline interaction and engagement through the Node can help. This event coincided with Pi Day, a celebration of the world's most famous mathematical constant and the Institute's unofficial nerd holiday.
Shenzhen as an Innovative and Accelerated City

Asei Ito, associate professor at the Institute of Social Science, University of Tokyo, shared comparative perspectives on the innovative and emerging start-up ecosystem in Shenzhen and its dramatic transformation from the "workshop of the world" in the 2000s to a rising hub of innovation and technology.
MEMSI Students Past and Present for Chinese New Year Reunion

The core goals of our entrepreneurship bootcamps are to educate and to build community. In that regard, we're proud that MEMSI has brought in four cohorts of students who have developed life-long friendships, with some joining forces to co-found startups together.
Transitioning Fundamental Innovation to the Marketplace

How do companies drive growth and innovate? Prof. Eugene Fitzgerald, Merton C. Flemings SMA Professor of Materials Engineering at MIT brought his experiences as a practicing researcher, serial innovator and entrepreneur to lead 50 executives from Prudential Hong Kong understand and practice the iterative innovation process. 
MEMSI January Showcase

We saw tremendous support at the MEMSI Showcase from over 150 attendees celebrating student entrepreneurship. Team foodbyte won the judges' prize with a smart tracking system to minimise food waste by monitoring date to expiration on refrigerated food, while Team MAMA ME-YA took home the audience's favorite with a wearable that improves the pumping experience for breastfeeding mothers.
