CoolThink@JC Celebrates its 1st Year!

This month marks the first anniversary of CoolThink@JC and a celebration of their efforts providing computational thinking opportunities for primary school students. The event was hosted at the Node, with MIT Professor Hal Abelson kicking off opening remarks to a group of 60 collaborators, "Don't just teach things kids should know. Teach them things where they can make change now."

The Node welcomed MIT alumni and their family and friends to experience the collaborative maker space. Participants experienced a taster of hands-on activities from making LED circuits to molecular gastronomy and designing personalised luggage tags. Former students from our past MEMSI programs shared their projects ideas and hardware prototypes, showcasing some of the fabrication techniques used for rapid prototyping. 
CoolThink@JC Kids at the Node

Primary school students of winning teams from the CoolThink@JC Competition 2017 spent a fun-filled weekend hosted by the MIT Hong Kong Innovation Node. Participants engaged in experiential learning activities on human-centred design, 3D printing, laser cutting, and molecular gastronomy.
Grand Opening of the MIT HK Innovation Node

We celebrated the grand opening of the MIT Hong Kong Innovation Node, officiated by the HKSAR Chief Executive, the Honourable Mrs. Carrie Lam. The Node is a collaborative space aiming to connect MIT with Hong Kong's academic, commercial and social communities through education and public engagement programs. 50 high school students and school leaders spent an afternoon learning about entrepreneurship and STEAM at the Node. Select teams from our inaugural high school bootcamp presented their business pitches and ideas to their fellow peers.

We had a vibrant evening at the MIT Hong Kong Innovation Node with students from the MIT-China MISTI program, matriculated students, Node alumni, and alumni of the MIT Club of Hong Kong uniting from around the region. Over finger food and drinks, cultural and intellectual experiences were shared and treasured.

MIT-CHIEF brought MIT startup teams to present at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. An audience of over 120 attendees including investors, academic and industry professionals saw eight teams pitch their business ideas and technologies, represented by MIT Media Lab, CSAIL, Department of Electrical Engineering, Department of Mechanical Engineering, and the Sloan School of Management.
MEMSI June Showcase 06.17.2017
Students presented their business ideas and proof-of-concept prototypes at the MIT Entrepreneurship & Maker Skills Integrator (MEMSI) Showcase Day on June 17th. Despite the rain, over 100 supporters showed up to celebrate the teams' hard work as they undertook an accelerated journey through two weeks of entrepreneurship, making, and factory visits to China.

MIT alumni families in Hong Kong put their creativity and problem solving skills to work with the MIT App Inventor. Facilitated by Josh Sheldon and Michael Tissenbaum from the MIT App Inventor team, thirteen families participated in an introductory session to app creation.
MEMSI Jan Showcase

Six teams of students from MIT and from Hong Kong presented their viable business ideas and prototypes to a full house of executives and supporters of entrepreneurship at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Their innovative ideas targeted a range of real-world issues from bike safety to education, healthcare, pets, public speaking, and social networks.

23 students from 10 high schools across Hong Kong embarked on an eight-day bootcamp at the MIT Hong Kong Innovation Node to learn about discliplined entrepreneurship and making. The program was joined by teachers and educators, witnessing how student teams bring market-relevant ideas from concept to prototype.

MIT PK-12 Action Group conducted workshops at the STEAM camp held at Chinese International School. The two-week event helped young innovators develop technology-enabled problem solving skills while nurturing the joy of making and tinkering with several MIT learning tools. From slime ball machines to smart homes to games created on Scratch and MIT App Inventor, the program culminated in a showcase for the community.
